A good bread requires only a few ingredients and good technique. People have been making bread for over 30,000 years. The first breads baked were very grainy, and had tiny pieces of stones from the grinding process. But the art of bread making has came along way since those days. There’s now an infinite of bread recipe out there. This recipe though is so simple and basic; a novice baker can make it. Your home will be filled with the aroma of yeasty fresh bread. There’s no better feeling than slicing homemade bread. Topped with butter, jam, avocado or anything. And served with a nice cup of tea or coffee. Check out my recipe below for honey whole wheat bread.
Honey Whole Wheat Bread
Makes 2 loaves of bread
Ingredients:
5 cups of whole wheat flour; plus 1/2 cup for kneading
1/2 Tsp of table salt
3 Tbsp of raw honey
1 Tbsp and 1/2 Tsp of instant dry yeast
2 cups of lukewarm water
1 Tbsp oil; use for the bowl and greasing of the pans
1 Tbsp of butter melted
Directions
First sift the 5 cups of whole wheat flour and salt in a small bowl and set aside. In a larger bowl ( I used my KitchenAid bowl); mix the yeast, honey and half a cup of the water. Let the yeast poof for about 10 minutes. The yeast will start to foam as it’s activated. Incorporate the flour into the yeast with the remaining water. Using the dough attachment, mix for about a minute or two till a sticky ball forms. On a floured surface with the half cup of flour start to knead the dough for about 15 minutes ( use the flour as needed). Knead the dough till it’s soft and enough gluten has developed. In light oiled bowl cover the dough and set aside for about two hours, or till it has doubled in size. After the dough has rested roll it out and divide it into 2 equal pieces. Roll each piece to a rectangular shape about ( 5”x10”). Then roll the dough from the smaller side, and tuck the ends into the bottom. Then place the dough in a lightly greased loaf pan. Do the same to the remaining dough. Let the dough rise again for at least an hour or 2. Preheat the oven to 350 F. When the oven is ready place two cups of water in a pan on the top shelf of the oven and place the bread in the oven on the lower shelf. Bake for about 40 minutes, or until a hallow sound is heard when knocked on. Let the dough rest for about 15-20 minutes before taking the loaf out of pan. Then lightly brush the tops with the melted butter. This bread can store in a refrigerator for a week. Enjoy!!
