Soft, fluffy cinnamon buns filled with warm spiced apples, toasted walnuts, and brown sugar, baked with heavy cream and finished with a homemade honey brown butter glaze.
There’s something so comforting about baking from scratch during autumn. The smell of cinnamon, apples, and freshly baked bread filling the kitchen is one of those simple pleasures that makes a house feel like home.
This week, I decided to make homemade apple walnut cinnamon buns. With fall in full swing, I wanted something warm, comforting, and a little indulgent without having to purchase a bunch of extra ingredients.
And that’s something I love about frugal living. It isn’t necessarily about spending the least amount of money possible. It’s about being intentional with what we purchase, appreciating what we already have, and finding ways to make something wonderful from simple ingredients.
🍎 Frugal Baking: Using What I Already Have
One thing I’ve learned over the years is that you don’t always have to follow a recipe exactly to make something delicious.
For these cinnamon buns, I wanted a maple brown butter glaze. Maple syrup would have complemented the apples, walnuts, and cinnamon beautifully.
However, I didn’t have maple syrup in my pantry.
Instead of making a special trip to the grocery store for one ingredient, I decided to substitute honey, which I already had at home.
And that’s what practical frugal living looks like in my kitchen.
It’s not about depriving ourselves of the foods we enjoy. It’s about being resourceful, flexible, and learning to work with what we have.
Of course, if you have maple syrup, I would absolutely recommend trying it in this recipe!
🍂 Why I Love Baking From Scratch
Homemade baking has always been about more than just the finished product for me.
There’s something rewarding about taking flour, yeast, butter, apples, and a few pantry staples and turning them into something special for the family.
Baking from scratch also allows me to control the ingredients, adjust sweetness, use seasonal produce, and sometimes save money compared with purchasing similar treats from a bakery.
Not every homemade recipe is automatically cheaper, especially when using ingredients such as butter, cream, and walnuts. But when I already have most of the ingredients, baking at home can be a practical way to stretch my grocery purchases.
And the bonus? The kitchen smells absolutely wonderful!
🍎 Homemade Apple Walnut Cinnamon Buns Recipe
Yield: 12 cinnamon buns
Oven: 350°F
Preparation and rising: Approximately 2–2½ hours
Baking: Approximately 25–35 minutes
Ingredients
For the dough:
● 4 cups (480 g) all-purpose flour
● ¾ cup warm whole milk
● 2¼ teaspoons instant yeast
● ¼ cup granulated sugar
● 2 large eggs
● ¼ cup softened unsalted butter
● 1 teaspoon salt
● 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the apple walnut filling:
● 3 medium apples, finely diced (approximately 2 cups)
● ¾ cup chopped walnuts
● ½ cup packed brown sugar
● 3 tablespoons butter, divided
● 1½ tablespoons ground cinnamon
● 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
● 1 tablespoon lemon juice
● Pinch of salt
Before baking:
● ½ cup slightly warmed heavy whipping cream
For the honey brown butter glaze:
● 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
● 1 cup powdered sugar
● 1 tablespoon honey
● 1–2 tablespoons heavy cream
● Pinch of salt
Optional: Substitute maple syrup for honey.
Instructions
1. Make the dough
Combine flour, yeast, sugar, and salt in a large mixing bowl.
Add the warm milk, eggs, softened butter, and vanilla. Knead for approximately 8–10 minutes until the dough becomes smooth and elastic.
Cover and allow to rise for 60–90 minutes, or until doubled in size.
2. Prepare the apple filling

Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a skillet. Add the diced apples, lemon juice, and salt.
Cook for approximately 5–7 minutes, until the apples soften and excess moisture evaporates. Stir in vanilla and allow to cool completely.
In a separate bowl, mix the brown sugar and cinnamon.
3. Toast the walnuts
Lightly toast chopped walnuts in a dry skillet over medium-low heat for 3–5 minutes until fragrant.
This simple step helps bring out their natural nutty flavor.
4. Assemble the cinnamon buns

Roll the dough into an approximately 12 × 18-inch rectangle.
Spread the remaining 2 tablespoons of softened butter across the dough.
Sprinkle with cinnamon brown sugar, cooked apples, and toasted walnuts.
Roll tightly from the long side and cut into 12 equal portions.
Arrange in a greased 9 × 13-inch baking dish.
Cover and let rise for another 35–50 minutes, until puffy.
5. My favorite addition: heavy cream!

Just before baking, pour ½ cup of slightly warmed heavy cream evenly over and between the cinnamon buns.
This helps create a wonderfully soft, rich, gooey texture.
Bake at 350°F for approximately 25–35 minutes, until golden brown and fully baked in the center. Because of the apples and cream, the buns may need a little extra baking time.

6. Prepare the honey brown butter glaze
Melt the butter over medium heat until golden brown and fragrant.
Allow to cool slightly, then whisk with powdered sugar, honey, salt, and enough heavy milk to create a smooth glaze.

Drizzle over the warm cinnamon buns.
Enjoy!

🤎 A Few Frugal Baking Tips
Here are some simple habits I try to incorporate into my kitchen:
● Use what you have: Honey instead of maple syrup is a perfect example.
● Bake seasonally: Apples are wonderful for autumn recipes, especially when purchased at a good price.
● Reduce food waste: Slightly softened apples that are still safe to eat can be perfect for cooked fillings.
● Make enough to share or save: Extra cinnamon buns can be frozen individually for another day.
● Keep pantry staples: Flour, yeast, cinnamon, sugar, and oats can be used in countless homemade recipes.
🍁 Frugal Living Doesn’t Mean Going Without
I think there’s a misconception that living frugally means constantly sacrificing or denying ourselves things we enjoy.
For me, it’s quite the opposite.
Being frugal means being mindful about where our money goes, appreciating the things we already own, reducing unnecessary purchases, and creating a lifestyle that feels fulfilling without constantly consuming.
Sometimes that means cooking dinner from scratch instead of ordering takeout.
Sometimes it means repurposing leftovers into another meal.
And sometimes it’s as simple as making homemade cinnamon buns with honey because there’s no maple syrup in the pantry.
These little decisions might not seem significant on their own, but over time they can make a difference.
And there’s something incredibly satisfying about enjoying a homemade treat knowing you made it yourself.
🍎 Final Thoughts
These homemade apple walnut cinnamon buns are everything I love about autumn baking: warm spices, seasonal fruit, comforting flavors, and the simplicity of making something from scratch.
Whether you’re trying to save money, reduce food waste, or simply enjoy more homemade meals and treats, I hope this recipe encourages you to get creative with what you already have.
Because frugal living isn’t about having less joy.
It’s about finding more joy in the simple things.
Happy autumn baking! 🍂🤍
